What can go into a dumpster in White Rock?

A private hauler and the receiving facility determine which materials a rented bin can contain. Describe the load accurately and confirm its destination before delivery.

Keep reusable, recyclable, compostable and regulated products separate. Metro Vancouver disposal bans and surcharges apply to garbage delivered in the region.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-reusable household junk
  • Furniture accepted by the selected hauler and facility
  • Construction debris approved for the selected facility
  • Clean wood, metal, gypsum and yard trimmings separated when required

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Asbestos, chemicals, fuels and biomedical waste
  • Batteries, electronics, propane cylinders, paint and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable materials banned from garbage
  • Tires, mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general waste

Do not hide restricted material in a mixed load. Use the City sorting tool or an approved stewardship depot.

Who handles residential collection?

The City collects garbage and Green Can material from properties in its eligible service zones. Under the Recycle BC program, the City also collects separated containers, glass and paper. Properties outside the eligible zones arrange private collection.

Collection frequency and limits

For eligible properties:

  • Garbage is collected every other week, with up to two bins per unit
  • Green Cans and kraft paper bags are collected weekly
  • Blue Boxes, Red Boxes and Yellow Bags are collected weekly
  • Each manually lifted container must be no larger than 110 litres and no heavier than 22 kg

Residents provide their own garbage bins and Green Cans. The City supplies the recycling boxes and bags. Always use the address schedule and current preparation rules.

Bulky-item removal, dumpster rental or drop-off?

White Rock does not collect large or special items through its curbside program. Residents must use an appropriate depot, self-haul to a facility or arrange private service.

For separated items and manageable loads

Use the City large-item directory to match furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, hazardous products and other materials with a suitable depot.

Placing dumpsters and storage bins

Place a rented container entirely on suitable private property whenever possible. A bin that closes or obstructs a City road or sidewalk requires review through White Rock's road-permit process.

Do not schedule delivery onto a road, sidewalk or boulevard until City Engineering confirms the required approval. Permit applications can require insurance, a business licence, notification and a traffic management plan.

Plan the placement

  • Ask the hauler to confirm the container fits fully on private property.
  • Keep sidewalks, sightlines, hydrants, driveways and travel lanes clear.
  • Provide the City with the proposed location, dates, dimensions and access impacts.

Public-space impacts

  • Road or sidewalk closures require a Road Use Permit.
  • Follow the current application checklist and every permit condition.
  • Arrange traffic control and prompt removal when required.
