What can go into a dumpster in West Vancouver?

Private haulers and receiving facilities set load-specific acceptance, weight and contamination rules. Identify each material before booking a bin.

Separate reusable, recyclable, compostable and hazardous products. Metro Vancouver disposal bans and surcharges apply to regional garbage loads.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-reusable household junk
  • Furniture accepted by the selected hauler and facility
  • Approved construction and renovation debris
  • Clean wood, metal, gypsum and yard trimmings separated for the appropriate stream

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Asbestos, chemicals, fuels and biomedical waste
  • Batteries, electronics, propane cylinders, paint and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable materials banned from garbage
  • Tires, mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general waste

Never conceal restricted material in a mixed load. Confirm the exact material with both the hauler and receiving facility.

Who handles residential collection?

The District collects garbage, Green Can material and yard trimmings from eligible curbside properties. Recycle BC is responsible for residential packaging and paper; Waste Control Services is its local collection contractor.

Collection frequency and set-out

Check the address-based schedule before every collection day:

  • Garbage is collected every other week
  • Green Can and yard trimmings are collected weekly
  • Blue-box, grey-box and yellow-bag recycling is collected weekly
  • Pink-box flexible plastics are collected every four weeks
  • Set material out between 5 and 7:30 a.m. on collection day, never the night before

Store garbage and food scraps in a wildlife-secure place, then bring containers back in by 9 p.m. Multi-family and commercial properties do not receive District garbage or organics collection.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a rented bin fully on suitable private property when possible. Occupying a District road, lane, sidewalk, boulevard or other municipal property requires an approved Street Occupancy Permit.

Apply before delivery. The March 2026 request form requires a site plan, traffic-control details when applicable, and proof of at least $2 million liability insurance naming the District as an additional insured.

Plan the placement

  • Ask the hauler to verify that the container fits on private property.
  • Keep sidewalks, sightlines, hydrants, driveways and travel lanes clear.
  • Document the proposed location, dimensions, dates and public-space impacts.

Municipal-property placement

  • Submit the Street Occupancy Request and supporting documents before placement.
  • Arrange any required traffic-control plan and protective measures.
  • Keep the approved permit on site and follow all conditions, dates and restoration requirements.
