What can go into a dumpster in Victoria?

Private disposal bins are not part of residential curbside service. Ask the hauler where the load will go and confirm the receiving facility accepts every material before delivery.

Hartland bans many recyclable, compostable, hazardous and construction materials from ordinary garbage. Renovation waste may require laboratory results or CRD pre-approval, even when no asbestos is expected.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-recyclable garbage
  • Furniture and bulky items accepted by the hauler
  • Carpet and other approved renovation material
  • Source-separated clean wood, treated wood or shingles routed to the correct facility stream

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Food scraps, yard waste, cardboard and other banned recyclable material
  • Paint, fuels, pesticides, batteries and other hazardous products
  • Drywall, concrete, metal and other construction materials banned from landfill disposal
  • Asbestos-containing or suspect renovation material, liquids and biomedical waste

Drywall is not accepted at Hartland for disposal or recycling. Use the CRD material search to find an appropriate destination.

How residential collection works

Collection responsibility is split. The City handles garbage and organics, while CRD curbside recycling is funded through Recycle BC and collected under the regional program.

Set-out and sorting basics

Confirm eligibility and use the address-based schedule for each program:

  • Place City garbage and organics carts out and accessible by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day
  • Garbage and organics are collected every two weeks
  • Place CRD recycling out by 7:30 a.m. and separate paper, containers, and glass into the required streams
  • The CRD blue-box program serves eligible single-family homes; apartments and condos arrange recycling through the property manager or hauler
  • Use the City Helping Hands program if a mobility challenge prevents moving carts to and from the collection point

City garbage/organics and CRD recycling have separate schedules and holiday rules. Check both tools rather than assuming they are collected together.

Drop-off and disposal for Victoria

Victoria residents have a local yard-waste drop-off and can use the regional Hartland facility for accepted recycling, special products and garbage.

Hartland renovation and demolition loads are screened. Review the CRD renovation-waste process before starting work; some loads need testing, documentation, pre-approval or an appointment.

Hours, rates and accepted materials can change. Secure loads and check facility requirements before leaving.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

The City does not advertise routine municipal bulky-item collection with its curbside cart program. Arrange an appropriate depot, donation, retailer take-back or private hauler for oversized items.

Use What Goes Where first. Hartland accepts many streams, but some products have free stewardship depots closer to Victoria.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a container entirely on suitable private property whenever possible. Waste containers and bins occupying a City street, sidewalk or boulevard require a Street Occupancy Permit.

The City asks for five to seven business days to process minor-impact applications. Larger impacts can take longer, and additional traffic-control or parking requirements may apply.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the container and collection truck off the public right-of-way.
  • Protect utilities, drainage, pavement and landscaping.
  • Maintain sightlines, fire access and a safe pedestrian route.

For public-space placement

  • Apply online and receive the permit before delivery.
  • Describe dates, dimensions, location and impacts accurately.
  • Allow time for City review and any parking-sign installation.
  • Follow permit, traffic-control and accessibility conditions.
