What can go into a dumpster in Vancouver?

Dumpster rentals are suited for large, one-time loads (renovations, cleanouts). Providers allow mixed loads, but City and facility rules restrict hazardous and special items.

Special items (batteries, propane tanks, paint, electronics) are not accepted curbside and must be taken to a Zero Waste Centre or approved depot.

Commonly accepted in dumpsters (confirm with your hauler/facility)

  • Household junk and non-recyclable waste from cleanouts
  • Renovation debris (wood, drywall, tile, flooring, cabinetry) — rules/fees vary by facility
  • Bulky items (furniture) — may incur extra fees depending on hauler/facility

Typically restricted or banned

  • Hazardous waste/materials (chemicals, oils, gasoline, pesticides)
  • Flammable liquids; pressurized containers
  • Paint and empty paint cans; batteries; propane tanks (use Zero Waste Centres)
  • Broken TVs and computer monitors; fluorescent bulbs/tubes
  • Tires; medications; asbestos; any material deemed unsafe by the City Engineer

Facilities such as the South Transfer Station and Vancouver Landfill have published “materials we don’t accept” lists; always check before loading a bin.

Who handles curbside garbage & recycling?

The City of Vancouver collects garbage, food scraps, and yard waste from eligible homes. Recycle BC is responsible for residential recycling; the City does not provide recycling collection.

Residential collection

Most households receive collection for:

  • Garbage
  • Recycling through Recycle BC (paper, containers, and cardboard must be sorted under program rules)
  • Green bin organics (food scraps & yard trimmings)

Set-out rules and collection days vary by address and zone. Use the City’s schedule lookup to confirm.

Permits for dumpsters & junk removal in Vancouver

Waste bins placed on a public street require City permission through the temporary street occupancy process. Private property placement does not use that permit process but still requires owner or strata approval.

Apply before delivery. The City asks for 7 to 10 business days after payment to process permits and arrange signs or meter covers.

Street & lane placement

  • A temporary street occupancy permit covers waste containers and bins.
  • Extra requirements may apply when travel, bike, sidewalk, or rear lanes are affected.
  • Insurance is required for businesses and contractors; resident moves are exempt.

Private property & strata rules

  • Get written approval from owners/strata.
  • Confirm load/weight limits for parkades and driveways.
  • Coordinate delivery/pickup windows.
