What can go into a dumpster in Kelowna?

A rented dumpster is private service, not part of curbside collection. Confirm the hauler, destination and material-specific charges before ordering or mixing a load.

Glenmore Landfill applies separate rules and rates to recyclable construction streams. Mandatory recyclables mixed with garbage may trigger a surcharge.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-recyclable garbage
  • Furniture accepted by the hauler and receiving facility
  • Construction and demolition debris accepted at Glenmore Landfill
  • Source-separated clean wood, concrete, asphalt, shingles or metal routed to the proper stream

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Cardboard, yard waste and other mandatory recyclable material mixed with garbage
  • Paint, fuel, pesticides, batteries, propane cylinders and household hazardous waste
  • Drywall, shingles and clean wood mixed into an ordinary garbage load
  • Asbestos-containing or suspect material, liquids, biomedical waste and hot ashes

Drywall and controlled waste have specific acceptance and preparation requirements. Contact the landfill before loading uncertain or fire-damaged material.

How residential collection works

Eligible single-family homes use automated carts. RDCO coordinates garbage and yard waste, while Recycle BC directly provides residential packaging and paper collection through its contractor.

Set-out and sorting basics

Use the address-based schedule and current program instructions:

  • Garbage is collected weekly
  • Recycling is collected every other week
  • Seasonal yard waste alternates with recycling
  • Place only accepted material in each cart and keep the lid closed
  • Keep carts accessible to the automated truck and clear of vehicles and obstacles
  • Contact the collection contractor for missed collection or a missing cart

Apartments, condos and commercial properties may have private or building-managed service. Ask the property manager which collection program applies.

Schedules and sorting tools

Collection responsibilities are split, so use the tool that matches the stream and address.

Drop-off and disposal for Kelowna

The City-owned Glenmore Landfill is the Central Okanagan regional disposal facility and accepts garbage plus multiple separated recycling and organic streams.

Secure and tarp every load. Check the current accepted-products page before visiting because rates, preparation rules and controlled-waste approval requirements differ by material.

The landfill is closed December 25, December 26 and January 1. Hours and fees can change.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Kelowna does not advertise a routine municipal curbside bulky-item pickup. Reuse suitable goods, self-haul accepted items or arrange a private service.

Private hauling or bin rental

For cleanouts and project waste

Confirm accepted materials, weight allowance, surcharges, final destination, placement needs and permit responsibility in writing.

Review landfill rates and rules

Self-haul to Glenmore

For sorted and bulky material

Separate recyclable construction material before arrival. The landfill accepts some bulky items, but active-face size and unloading rules apply.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep containers entirely on suitable private property where possible. A temporary container placed on a City road right-of-way falls under Kelowna's road usage and hoarding permit process.

Work cannot begin without an approved permit. The City says applications are approved or declined within five business days, so apply before arranging delivery.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and collection truck off sidewalks, bike lanes and roads.
  • Protect pavement, utilities, drainage and landscaping.
  • Maintain sightlines, emergency access and safe pedestrian routes.

For right-of-way placement

  • Use the applicable road usage or hoarding application.
  • Provide the location, dimensions, dates and traffic impacts.
  • Allow at least the City's stated review period before delivery.
  • Keep the approved permit on site and follow all traffic and pedestrian conditions.
