What can go into a dumpster in Penticton?

A rented dumpster is private service. Confirm accepted materials, required separation, destination, weight allowance and extra charges with both the hauler and receiving facility before loading.

RDOS charges by material and applies special rules to demolition, renovation, controlled and hazardous waste. Separate reusable, recyclable and compostable material before hauling, and arrange assessment or approval when required.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Non-hazardous household cleanout waste
  • Furniture and bulky goods accepted by the hauler and landfill
  • Construction and demolition material accepted under current RDOS rules
  • Source-separated metal, untreated wood, concrete, masonry, drywall or yard waste

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Paint, fuel, chemicals, batteries, propane cylinders and other household hazardous waste
  • Electronics, tires, appliances and stewardship products that have separate diversion areas
  • Asbestos-containing, burned-structure and other controlled waste without the required assessment and approval
  • Biomedical, radioactive, liquid, hot or smouldering material and other prohibited waste

The landfill household hazardous-waste facility serves residents in its service area and does not accept commercial or industrial products. Check the current material rules before travelling.

How residential collection works

Eligible curbside properties receive automated garbage, recycling and yard-waste carts. Multi-family buildings generally receive City recycling only and must arrange their other services through the property manager or a private provider.

Set-out and sorting basics

Use the current address-based calendar and City sorting guidance:

  • Set out garbage weekly and recycling every second week
  • Set out yard waste every second week during the seasonal program; food and kitchen scraps are not accepted
  • Place carts at the collection point by 7:00 a.m. with lids fully closed
  • Point the lid arrows toward the road and leave at least one metre around each cart and obstacle
  • Place accepted recycling loose, empty and rinsed; do not bag or nest it
  • Keep glass containers, flexible plastics, foam, electronics and hazardous products out of the recycling cart and use an appropriate depot

Collection vehicles may empty carts at different times. Leave each scheduled cart out until it has been emptied, and report missed collection to the City’s contractor.

Drop-off and disposal for Penticton

Campbell Mountain Landfill accepts garbage and listed separated materials and operates recycling and residential household hazardous-waste facilities. Fees, hours and approval requirements depend on the material and season.

Tarp and secure every load. RDOS states that untarped loads are charged double the applicable fee, subject to the posted minimum. Separating materials can substantially reduce disposal charges.

Household hazardous waste is accepted only until 4:00 p.m. on landfill operating days. Winter Sunday and statutory-holiday closures differ from summer operations.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Penticton schedules a limited annual large-item collection for eligible curbside homes. Outside that event, reuse suitable goods, self-haul accepted material or arrange private service.

City large-item collection

Limited annual curbside event

For 2026, eligible homes could set out up to two accepted items during April 13–17, with a 90 kg limit per item. Building material, construction waste, electronics and several other categories were excluded; future dates and rules may change.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep containers entirely on suitable private property where possible. A limited, partial or full occupation of a City street—including a boulevard, sidewalk or on-street space—requires City review through the road-closure and street-occupancy process.

The City explicitly lists on-street containers as an activity requiring a Road Closure & Street Occupancy Permit. Obtain approval before delivery; the City may require traffic and pedestrian accommodation documents.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and service vehicle clear of sidewalks, bike lanes and roads.
  • Protect pavement, drainage, utilities and overhead clearance.
  • Maintain emergency access, sightlines and safe pedestrian travel.

For public-space impacts

  • Contact City Engineering before arranging delivery.
  • Submit the current Road Closure & Street Occupancy application.
  • Show the container location, dates and impacts on the required plans.
  • Follow all approved traffic, pedestrian, insurance, inspection and restoration conditions.
