What can go into a dumpster in Richmond?

Private haulers and receiving facilities set their own material, weight and contamination rules. Describe every material in the load before booking a bin or arriving at a facility.

Keep reusable, recyclable and hazardous materials out of mixed garbage. Confirm the destination and all extra charges with the hauler in writing.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Household junk that has no practical reuse or recycling option
  • Furniture and bulky items not eligible for City pickup
  • Construction debris accepted by the selected hauler and facility
  • Clean wood, metal, gypsum and yard material when separated for an appropriate processor

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Asbestos, fuels, chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Batteries, electronics, propane cylinders, paint and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable materials banned from regional garbage loads
  • Tires, mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general waste

Many restricted products have stewardship or depot programs. Never conceal them in a mixed load.

Who handles residential collection?

The City provides curbside garbage, recycling and Green Cart service to single-family homes and some townhomes. Some multi-family properties receive centralized City service; others use private collection.

Typical City collection frequency

For eligible curbside properties:

  • Garbage is collected every two weeks
  • Green Carts and eligible yard trimmings are collected weekly
  • Recycling dates and instructions are shown in the address-based City schedule

Collection arrangements vary for apartments, condominiums, townhomes and businesses. Confirm service with the strata, property manager or private hauler when no City schedule appears for the address.

Permits for dumpsters and storage containers

Richmond requires authorization before a container occupies a City street or boulevard. Construction waste containers use the temporary street occupancy process; moving and storage containers use the temporary placement permit.

Place the container on private property when practical. Approval is not automatic, and separate traffic-management or lane-closure requirements may apply.

Permit and operator requirements

  • Use the City form that matches a construction bin or moving/storage container.
  • The owner or operator needs a valid Richmond business licence and at least $5 million liability coverage naming the City as additional insured.
  • Display the permit and operator contact information on the container.

Placement conditions

  • Use high-visibility reflective markings and place the longest side parallel to the curb.
  • Maintain four metres of unobstructed road clearance.
  • Setbacks apply near intersections, driveways, sidewalks, crosswalks, hydrants and traffic controls.
