What can go into a dumpster in Saanich?

Private bins are separate from municipal curbside service. Confirm every material with the hauler and receiving facility, especially for renovation, demolition and mixed loads.

Hartland inspects loads and bans many recyclable, compostable, hazardous and construction materials from ordinary garbage. Renovation loads may need testing, documentation or CRD pre-approval.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-recyclable garbage
  • Furniture and bulky items accepted by the hauler
  • Carpet and approved renovation debris
  • Source-separated clean wood, treated wood or shingles routed to an accepting facility

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Food scraps, yard waste, cardboard and other banned recyclable material
  • Paint, fuels, pesticides, batteries and other hazardous products
  • Drywall, concrete, metal and other construction material banned from landfill disposal
  • Asbestos-containing or suspect renovation material, liquids and biomedical waste

Drywall is not accepted at Hartland for disposal or recycling. Search the CRD directory for an appropriate destination.

How residential collection works

Saanich collects garbage and organics. CRD blue-box recycling is a separate program, so collection dates, set-out rules and service contacts differ.

Set-out and sorting basics

Use both address-based schedules and follow the rules for each stream:

  • Place Saanich-issued garbage and organics carts at the curb by 7 a.m.
  • Separate trucks collect garbage and organics on the same scheduled day every two weeks
  • Keep cart lids closed and leave at least one metre of clearance around carts
  • Use only certified compostable or paper liners in the organics cart; do not use plastic or merely biodegradable bags
  • Up to two extra garbage bags may be set out with valid Saanich stickers; current prices and weight limits are posted by the District
  • Keep CRD blue-box recyclables out of Saanich garbage and organics carts

Apartments, condos and other multi-family properties may use different collection arrangements. Confirm service with the property manager or collection provider.

Drop-off and disposal for Saanich

Saanich residents can use the municipal yard-waste drop-off. Hartland provides regional garbage disposal and separate drop-off streams for many recyclable and special products.

Review the CRD renovation-waste process before demolition or renovation. Suspect materials can require laboratory results, proof of installation date, pre-approval or controlled-waste arrangements.

Hours, fees and accepted materials can change. Secure loads and check the live facility page before leaving.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Saanich curbside collection does not provide routine bulky-item pickup. Use reuse, retailer take-back, an appropriate depot or a private hauler for furniture and oversized material.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep the container entirely on suitable private property when possible. A bin occupying a Saanich road allowance requires an approved Permit to Occupy the Road Allowance before placement.

The District asks applicants to provide a location sketch and allow at least five business days for Road Allowance Occupancy permit processing. Insurance and traffic or pedestrian controls may be required.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and collection truck off the public road allowance.
  • Protect utilities, drainage, pavement and landscaping.
  • Maintain sightlines, fire access and safe pedestrian routes.

For road-allowance placement

  • Apply for the occupancy permit before delivery.
  • Show the address, bin location, dimensions, dates and nearby pedestrian and vehicle routes.
  • Arrange required insurance and traffic control.
  • Follow every permit condition and remove the bin when the approved period ends.
