What can go into a dumpster in Chilliwack?

Private haulers set bin rules, while the receiving facility controls final acceptance. Confirm the load type, destination, sorting requirements and weight allowance in writing before delivery.

The Fraser Valley requires compostables and recyclables to be separated from garbage. A mixed bin is not a substitute for sorting recoverable or regulated material.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Non-hazardous household cleanout waste
  • Furniture and bulky waste accepted by the receiving facility
  • Construction debris accepted by the hauler and facility
  • Source-separated wood, metal, concrete or other recoverable material

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste
  • Recyclable packaging, paper, glass and flexible plastics
  • Paint, solvents, pesticides, fuels and household hazardous waste
  • Batteries, electronics, propane cylinders and stewardship products
  • Asbestos, biomedical waste, contaminated soil, liquids and unknown material

Bailey Landfill has disposal bans and special procedures for controlled materials, including asbestos. Review the current facility page before loading.

How residential collection works

The City changed to its current automated cart program on May 1, 2026. Most single-family homes and duplexes are eligible; multi-family and business properties generally arrange private service.

Current set-out and sorting basics

Use the address-specific calendar and current City sorting guide:

  • Use the green cart weekly for accepted food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste
  • Set out the black garbage cart every two weeks, alternating with the blue recycling cart
  • Place accepted packaging and paper loose in the blue cart with the lid closed
  • Use the grey bin for glass bottles and jars and the pink bin for clean flexible plastics
  • Set out grey and pink bins once per month on their scheduled day
  • Use wildlife-resistant carts and follow wildlife-area timing where required

Only City-provided carts and bins are accepted in the current program. Collection dates and alerts are address-specific.

Drop-off and disposal for Chilliwack

Bailey Sanitary Landfill accepts eligible local waste and selected separated materials. Municipal and bottle depots handle different recyclable and stewardship products.

Check the current facility page before every trip for origin restrictions, hours, fees, bans and special preparation rules. Secure the load and be prepared to unload it yourself.

A recycling depot is not a general garbage facility. Search the item and confirm acceptance at the specific location before travelling.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a bin or storage pod entirely on suitable private property where possible. The City Highway Works permit form expressly includes bins and pods when their placement uses a road, sidewalk or boulevard.

The City requires the complete application package at least five days before work. Requirements include a traffic-management plan, valid Chilliwack business licence and specified liability insurance.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the container and collection vehicle off roads, sidewalks and boulevards.
  • Protect utilities, drainage, pavement and overhead clearance.
  • Maintain fire, vehicle and pedestrian access.

For public-space placement

  • Contact Engineering and apply for a Highway Works permit before delivery.
  • Provide the required traffic-management plan and application documents.
  • Submit at least five days before the proposed start.
  • Follow every approved location, safety, access and removal condition.
