What can go into a dumpster in Delta?

Private haulers and receiving facilities set load-specific rules. Identify every material, especially renovation debris, before ordering a bin.

Separate reusable, recyclable, compostable and hazardous material. Regional disposal bans and landfill surcharges apply to mixed garbage loads.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-reusable household junk that is not recyclable or compostable
  • Furniture and bulky items outside City program eligibility or limits
  • Construction debris accepted by the selected hauler and facility
  • Wood, gypsum, metal and yard material separated for the appropriate processor

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Asbestos, fuels, chemicals, liquids and other hazardous waste
  • Batteries, electronics, paint, propane cylinders, tires and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable materials banned from regional garbage loads
  • Mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general waste

Use stewardship and facility drop-off programs for restricted products. Never hide hazardous material in a mixed load.

Who handles residential collection?

The City provides weekly garbage, recycling and Green Can service to participating curbside properties. Townhome residents should confirm whether they use curbside or shared recycling. Multi-family garbage and food-scrap service may be privately arranged.

Curbside frequency and limits

For properties receiving City curbside service:

  • Garbage, recycling and Green Can materials are collected every week
  • Two standard garbage cans or bags are included; each may be up to 100 L and 25 kg
  • Recycling must be sorted into the designated blue bin, grey bin and yellow bag streams

Extra garbage requires a City garbage sticker. Holiday collections shift by one day for the remainder of the affected week.

Permits for dumpsters and storage bins

Delta requires a Highway Use Permit for storage-bin placement on a roadway. Keep a bin entirely on private property when possible; otherwise obtain approval before delivery.

Contact Delta Engineering before booking a roadway bin. Permit fees apply, and the City determines the supporting documents required for the placement.

Application documents

  • Use the City’s Highway Use Permit application.
  • A site map, photographs, security deposit or traffic management plan may be required.
  • Required insurance must name the City of Delta as additional insured for $5 million.

Placement planning

  • Confirm the exact bin location and duration with Engineering.
  • Plan for safe access, visibility and any effect on traffic or pedestrians.
  • Do not arrange delivery to the road before the permit is approved.
