What can go into a dumpster in Lions Bay?

A rented disposal bin is separate from Lions Bay curbside service. Confirm the load with both the hauler and receiving facility before delivery.

Paints, solvents, motor oil, batteries, electronics, mattresses, drywall and other regulated or recyclable products require an appropriate depot or receiving facility; do not mix them into an ordinary garbage bin.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-recyclable household garbage
  • Furniture accepted by the hauler and receiving facility
  • Approved construction and renovation debris
  • Separated clean wood, metal, concrete, gypsum and other recoverable material

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Food scraps, yard trimmings, cardboard and curbside recyclables
  • Paint, solvents, fuels, pesticides, batteries and pressurized cylinders
  • Electronics, appliances, tires and used oil products
  • Asbestos-containing material, contaminated soil, liquids and biomedical waste

Hazardous and asbestos-containing materials may require testing, special packaging and advance facility approval.

How residential collection works

The 2026 calendar marks garbage weeks and lists neighbourhood-specific earliest set-out times for wildlife attractants. Clean, non-attractant recycling may be set out after 5 a.m.

Friday collection rules

Use the current calendar and follow the time assigned to your street:

  • Recycling, compostables and yard waste are collected every Friday
  • Landfill garbage is collected every second Friday
  • The 2026 calendar limits garbage to two cans with 121 litres total; extra-pickup stickers are sold at the municipal office
  • Separate hard plastic and metal packaging, glass, and flattened cardboard/paper for recycling
  • Use certified compostable bags for kitchen scraps and kraft bags or compliant tied bundles for yard waste
  • Remove containers from the street by 8 p.m. on collection day

Municipal pages contain inconsistent older garbage-volume figures. This guide uses the current 2026 collection calendar; confirm the live calendar before set-out.

Drop-off and disposal for Lions Bay

The local Community Recycling Depot accepts a defined set of special recyclables. Lions Bay residents can use the North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre for broader recycling and garbage drop-off.

The Village states that the Squamish Landfill is not available to residents of Metro Vancouver municipalities. Confirm destination eligibility, hours, material rules and fees before travelling.

Secure every load. Regional disposal bans and surcharges apply, so separate recyclable and stewardship materials before arrival.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Lions Bay does not advertise a routine municipal curbside bulky-item program. Use an appropriate drop-off facility or arrange a private hauler for items outside the curbside limits.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a rented container entirely on suitable private property when possible. A disposal bin or moving container placed on a public highway requires Village approval before delivery.

The Village application states that the Public Works Manager may approve temporary highway placement of construction material, a disposal bin or a moving container. The form currently lists a $35 daily fee and requires a placement diagram; verify current fees when applying.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and collection truck clear of the public highway.
  • Protect drainage, utilities, septic systems and soft ground.
  • Maintain emergency access, sightlines and safe pedestrian movement.

For highway placement

  • Apply and obtain approval before delivery.
  • Show property boundaries, driveways, parking signs, hydrants and other infrastructure on the placement diagram.
  • Provide dates, location, container dimensions and any related building-permit number.
  • Follow all approval conditions and the stated expiry date.
