What can go into a dumpster in Prince George?

A rented dumpster is private service. Confirm the receiving facility, accepted materials, sorting rules and load limits with the hauler before filling it.

Sorting demolition, land-clearing and construction materials can cost less than disposing of a mixed load at Foothills. Keep recyclable and controlled materials separate.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-hazardous household garbage
  • Furniture, mattresses and other bulky material accepted at Foothills
  • Construction debris such as concrete, asphalt, roofing and drywall
  • Source-separated wood, metal and other recoverable project material

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Paint, solvents, pesticides, fuels, batteries and other hazardous products
  • Liquids, hot ashes, explosives, radioactive material and ignitable waste
  • Asbestos or contaminated soil without the required Regional District permit
  • Refrigerant appliances, propane tanks, used oil and recyclable packaging mixed into garbage

Controlled waste, including asbestos, requires advance authorization and is accepted only at Foothills. Contact the Regional District before loading or transporting it.

How residential collection works

Prince George uses colour-coded collection zones. The City collects garbage carts, while Recycle BC's contractor collects sorted residential packaging and paper on a separate schedule.

Set-out and sorting basics

Use the address-based schedules and current collection instructions:

  • Put the garbage cart out between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on collection day
  • Close the lid fully and do not leave excess garbage beside the cart
  • Provide two metres of clearance from vehicles and recycling containers
  • Remove carts and recycling containers from the curb by 7:00 p.m.
  • Store garbage in a bear-resistant location between collections
  • Keep curbside recycling sorted; take flexible plastics, foam and other depot-only material to an approved depot

Apartment, strata, business and rural services may differ. Confirm responsibility with the property manager, collector or Regional District.

Garbage and recycling are operated separately, so check both schedules for your address.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Prince George does not advertise routine municipal curbside bulky-item pickup. Reuse suitable goods, self-haul accepted items or book a private service.

Private hauling or bin rental

For cleanouts and project waste

Confirm material restrictions, weight allowance, sorting charges, final destination and responsibility for any placement permit.

Review Foothills rules

Self-haul bulky items

For furniture and excess garbage

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a container entirely on suitable private property where possible. Placing equipment or materials in a municipal roadway, sidewalk or boulevard requires a Highway Right-of-Way Occupancy Permit.

The City currently requires an application, fees, a security deposit and proof of $5 million general liability insurance for right-of-way occupancy. Confirm requirements before reserving delivery.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and collection truck off sidewalks and roadways.
  • Protect pavement, utilities and drainage.
  • Maintain sightlines, emergency access and safe pedestrian routes.

For public right-of-way placement

  • Apply for the occupancy permit before delivery.
  • Provide the location, duration and placement details.
  • Submit insurance and any traffic-management information requested by the City.
  • Follow all approved access, signage, inspection and removal conditions.
