What can go into a dumpster on Bowen Island?

Private haulers and receiving facilities set load-specific rules. Island transport also affects container availability, timing and cost, so identify every material before booking.

Bowen Island garbage enters the Metro Vancouver system. Regional disposal bans and surcharges apply, including requirements to keep organics and recyclable materials out of garbage.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-recyclable household garbage
  • Furniture accepted by the selected hauler and receiving facility
  • Approved construction and renovation debris
  • Separated clean wood, metal, gypsum and other recoverable materials sent to an appropriate facility

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Food scraps, yard trimmings and recyclable material
  • Paint, fuels, chemicals, batteries and biomedical waste
  • Electronics, propane cylinders, used oil and other stewardship products
  • Tires, mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general garbage

Never conceal hazardous or restricted material in a mixed load. Confirm both transport and receiving requirements before loading.

Who handles residential collection?

The Municipality contracts Bowen Waste Solutions for residential garbage and organics. Commercial properties with more garbage than one can must arrange private service. Recycling is delivered to the depot rather than collected curbside.

Collection frequency and limits

Use the current map and calendar to confirm the applicable route:

  • Regular garbage is collected every two weeks on Tuesday, alternating between east and west Bowen Island
  • One garbage can is included; extra cans or bags need a paid decal
  • Garbage must be bagged, accessible by 8 a.m. and no heavier than 18 kg
  • One kitchen-waste container is collected every Wednesday
  • Up to three additional yard-waste cans, bags or bundles are collected weekly; each must be no heavier than 18 kg

Keep food scraps out of garbage. Secure garbage and organics from wildlife and use the Municipality’s current schedule because holiday service can shift.

Drop-off and disposal for Bowen Island

The Bowen Island Recycling Depot is the local recycling destination, not a general-purpose dump. Remaining garbage and many bulky or construction loads require a special event, private service or transport to a mainland facility.

Confirm acceptance, sorting, appointment requirements, ferry logistics, hours and fees before moving a load. Never leave material outside the depot.

The Municipality says collected Bowen Island garbage is transported to the North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Bowen Island does not provide routine curbside bulky-item collection. The Municipality typically advertises limited spring and fall clean-up events, while other loads need private removal or confirmed self-haul.

Special clean-up events

Limited seasonal opportunities

Check the current event notice for dates, decals, appointments, load sizes, fees and exclusions. Past event details are not a guarantee of the next event’s rules.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a rented container fully on suitable private property whenever possible. Do not place a bin on a municipal road, shoulder, ditch, boulevard or other road right-of-way without first obtaining direction from Bowen Island Municipal Public Works.

The Municipality regulates work and encroachments in road allowances and issues traffic and street-use approvals. Ask Public Works which approval applies to a temporary waste container before delivery.

Plan private-property placement

  • Confirm the bin and collection truck can remain on the property.
  • Protect septic systems, wells, drainage, overhead lines and soft ground.
  • Keep road sightlines, emergency access and pedestrian movement clear.

If public space may be affected

  • Contact Public Works Roads before reserving or delivering the container.
  • Provide the proposed location, size, dates and traffic or drainage impacts.
  • Follow the approval, safety, insurance and restoration conditions staff assigns.
