What can go into a dumpster in Kamloops?

A rented dumpster is private service. Confirm its destination, accepted materials and sorting requirements with the hauler before mixing a load.

Kamloops charges substantially different rates for mixed and source-separated demolition, land-clearing and construction waste. Mixed loads are charged at the highest applicable rate.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Bagged non-recyclable household garbage
  • Furniture and bulky waste accepted by the receiving facility
  • Construction and demolition debris accepted at Mission Flats or the Resource Recovery Centre
  • Source-separated wood, gypsum, asphalt roofing, concrete, asphalt or clean fill

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Paint, fuel, pesticides, batteries, propane cylinders and other hazardous products
  • Hot ashes, liquids, biomedical waste and explosive or corrosive material
  • Potential asbestos-containing material without required preparation and an appointment
  • Organics, recyclable packaging and other divertible material mixed into garbage

The Resource Recovery Centre does not accept potential asbestos-containing material. Contact Mission Flats before preparing or transporting suspect material.

How residential collection works

Kamloops has five collection zones. Garbage and recycling alternate every other week, and the organics cart goes out every week on the zone collection day.

Set-out and sorting basics

Follow the current zone calendar and cart instructions:

  • Place carts curbside by 7:00 a.m. with lids completely closed
  • Between April 1 and November 30, do not set carts out before 4:00 a.m.
  • Remove carts from the curb by 7:00 p.m.
  • Keep recycling loose and put glass, foam and flexible plastics in an approved depot stream
  • Use paper-based liners only in the organics cart; no plastic or compostable-plastic bags
  • Keep carts secure and inaccessible to wildlife between collections

Collection eligibility and containers differ for some apartments, condos and businesses. Confirm service with the City or property manager.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Kamloops does not advertise routine municipal curbside bulky-item pickup. Reuse suitable goods, self-haul accepted items or arrange private hauling.

Private hauling or bin rental

For cleanouts and project waste

Confirm accepted material, weight, sorting charges, final destination and responsibility for placement permits before delivery.

Review disposal facilities

Self-haul bulky items

For furniture and excess garbage

Mission Flats and Barnhartvale accept specified bulky items for current fees. Separate reusable and recyclable material first.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep a container entirely on suitable private property where possible. Occupying or carrying out work in a City road right-of-way requires review through the road right-of-way usage permit process.

The City requires construction road-right-of-way applications at least seven working days before the proposed start. Confirm the applicable permit and traffic-management requirements before scheduling a street delivery.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and collection truck off sidewalks, roads and bike routes.
  • Protect pavement, utilities and drainage.
  • Maintain sightlines, emergency access and safe pedestrian routes.

For right-of-way placement

  • Contact the Transportation Division before reserving delivery.
  • Submit the current permit form at least seven working days ahead.
  • Provide the location, dates and required traffic-management plan.
  • Follow every approved insurance, signage and access condition.
