What can go into a dumpster in Squamish?

Private bins must comply with the hauler, receiving facility, District separation rules and wildlife-attractant requirements. Confirm the destination and material rules before delivery.

The landfill applies a surcharge when a garbage load contains more than 5% recyclable, compostable or non-accepted material. Separate each material and tell the scale attendant before unloading to receive the applicable rate.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-hazardous residual garbage originating within the SLRD
  • Furniture and bulky material within facility size limits
  • Construction and demolition material accepted under current District rules
  • Source-separated clean wood, yard waste, dirty wood, metal, concrete or non-asbestos gypsum

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Paint, fuel, chemicals, batteries and other hazardous or stewardship products
  • Hot, smouldering, flammable, explosive, biomedical or liquid waste
  • Asbestos-containing drywall or gypsum; the Squamish Landfill does not accept it
  • Soil, railway ties, oversized fabricated objects and other prohibited materials

Drywall has documentation and handling requirements even when it does not contain asbestos. Check the current construction-waste instructions before loading it.

How residential collection works

District-contracted service covers single-family homes, duplexes and some townhouses. Multi-family properties outside curbside service must arrange collection and separate garbage, organics and recycling.

Set-out and sorting basics

Use the address lookup and current calendar because routes and holiday changes vary:

  • Put totes out and unlock them by 7:15 a.m. on collection day—not the night before
  • Keep attractant totes locked at all other times and preferably inside a secure enclosure
  • Leave one metre of clearance around each tote and keep lids fully closed
  • Place accepted packaging and paper loose, empty and rinsed in the recycling tote
  • Take glass, flexible plastics and foam packaging to an appropriate depot
  • Use paper to line organics containers; no plastic, compostable or biodegradable plastic bags

The current 2026 calendar shows weekly organics from May 4 through October 23. Outside that period, organics is collected on recycling weeks.

For 2026, the landfill lists daily hours of 9:00 a.m.–4:45 p.m. December–February and 9:00 a.m.–5:45 p.m. March–November, with reduced or closed holiday hours.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

Squamish does not advertise a routine municipal bulky-item pickup. Reuse suitable goods, self-haul correctly separated material, or hire a private provider for larger loads.

Reuse or self-haul

Keep usable material out of disposal

Offer suitable household goods through a local reuse option and take reusable construction material accepted by Squamish ReBuild. Check landfill size, fee and material rules for the remainder.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep containers fully on suitable private property when possible. Occupying District roads, sidewalks, ditches, boulevards or other municipal property requires approval before delivery.

The District explicitly requires a Form A Street Occupancy Work Permit for placing storage or disposal bins on municipal property. An application does not authorize occupancy until the permit is issued.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and service vehicle clear of every public right-of-way.
  • Use a bear-resistant container and keep refuse locked as required.
  • Protect pavement, drainage, utilities and overhead clearance.
  • Maintain emergency access and safe sightlines.

For municipal-property impacts

  • Apply for the current Form A Street Occupancy Work Permit before delivery.
  • Show the location, dates, dimensions and affected infrastructure.
  • Provide traffic-control, insurance or security documents when required.
  • Follow every placement, access, restoration and inspection condition.
