What can go into a dumpster in Pitt Meadows?

A private hauler and the receiving facility determine which materials a rented bin can contain. Confirm the load type, destination and preparation requirements before delivery.

Keep reusable, recyclable, compostable and regulated products separate. Metro Vancouver disposal bans and surcharges apply to garbage delivered in the region.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-reusable household junk
  • Furniture accepted by the selected hauler and facility
  • Construction debris approved for the selected facility
  • Clean wood, metal, gypsum and yard trimmings separated when required

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Asbestos, chemicals, fuels and biomedical waste
  • Batteries, electronics, propane cylinders, paint and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable materials banned from garbage
  • Tires, mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general waste

Do not conceal restricted material in a mixed load. Search by exact item or ask the receiving facility before loading.

Who handles residential collection?

Waste Management of Canada collects garbage and food/yard waste under the City program. Recycle BC, not the City, manages residential packaging and paper recycling; GFL Environmental is its Pitt Meadows collection partner.

Collection frequency and set-out

For properties receiving curbside service:

  • Garbage is collected every other week
  • Food and yard waste is collected weekly
  • Separated recycling is collected weekly
  • Set recycling out by 7 a.m.; follow the City schedule and wildlife-safe timing for garbage and organics
  • Extra tagged garbage or green-waste bags are limited to two on a regular service day

Store garbage, recycling and green-waste carts securely until collection day. Never place plastic, including products labelled compostable or biodegradable, in the green cart.

Placing dumpsters and storage bins

Keep a rented container fully on suitable private property when possible. Pitt Meadows lists a Bin Permit among the activities requiring a Highway Use Permit.

Apply before placing a bin on a City street, lane, sidewalk, boulevard or other public highway. The City advises allowing up to 15 business days for review, and fees, inspections and security may apply.

Plan the placement

  • Ask the hauler to confirm the container fits entirely on private property.
  • Keep sidewalks, sightlines, hydrants, driveways and travel lanes clear.
  • Document the proposed location, dates, dimensions and public-space impacts.

Public-highway placement

  • Submit a complete Highway Use Permit application for a bin permit.
  • Budget for the current permit and inspection charges and any required security.
  • Follow every permit condition and request the required completion inspection.
