What can go into a dumpster in New Westminster?

Private haulers and receiving facilities set load-specific rules. Tell the provider about every material before ordering a bin, especially renovation debris.

Separate reusable, recyclable, compostable and hazardous material. Metro Vancouver disposal bans and surcharges apply to mixed garbage loads.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-reusable household junk that is not recyclable or compostable
  • Furniture and bulky items outside City special-pickup rules
  • Construction debris accepted by the selected hauler and receiving facility
  • Wood, gypsum, metal and yard material separated for the appropriate processor

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Asbestos, fuels, chemicals, liquids and other hazardous waste
  • Batteries, electronics, paint, propane cylinders, tires and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable materials banned from regional garbage loads
  • Mattresses, gypsum and appliances mixed into general waste

Use stewardship programs and designated drop-off sites for restricted products. Never conceal hazardous material in a mixed load.

Who handles residential collection?

The City provides curbside garbage, recycling, glass, and yard-trimmings and food-scraps service. It also provides recycling and food-scraps collection for most multi-family buildings; residents should confirm arrangements with their building manager.

Curbside frequency and placement

For homes receiving City curbside service:

  • Garbage and recycling carts are collected every two weeks on alternating weeks
  • Yard trimmings and food scraps are collected every week, year-round
  • Separate grey-box glass collection occurs once every four weeks for each glass group

Put carts out by 7:00 am, leave space around each cart and do not leave carts out overnight. Statutory holidays can change collection days.

Private bin or junk removal

For construction debris and larger cleanouts

A bin is practical when you can load material yourself. Junk removal includes labour. Confirm accepted materials, weight allowance, disposal destination and surcharges before booking.

Permits for dumpsters and disposal bins

A Street Occupancy Permit is required when a disposal bin occupies any part of a City street, lane, sidewalk, path or other right-of-way. Keep the bin entirely on private property when practical.

Apply before delivery. The City says applications normally require 5–10 business days to process; disposal-bin applications do not require a traffic management plan.

Before applying

  • Confirm the exact location, dimensions and occupancy dates.
  • Allow time for permit review before arranging delivery.
  • Budget for the application, occupancy and any temporary no-parking fees.

Safe placement

  • Keep pedestrian, cyclist, vehicle and emergency access clear.
  • Follow every location, duration and traffic-control condition on the permit.
  • Remove the bin and reopen the occupied area when the permit ends.
