How waste services work on Vancouver Island
There is no single island-wide collection or disposal system. Municipalities, regional districts, First Nations and private collectors divide responsibility, and the applicable program depends on the property address and material.
Confirm the collector
Use the local guide and address-based schedule before setting material out. A city and its surrounding electoral areas can have different collectors and rules.
Use the correct district
CRD, RDN, Cowichan Valley and Comox Strathcona facilities serve different areas. Loads may have eligibility, sorting, size or pre-approval requirements.
Check before travelling
Confirm hours, fees and accepted materials on the facility website. Hazardous, asbestos-containing, construction and controlled waste often need separate handling.
