Waste & recycling in Whistler, BC

Whistler uses a resident drop-off system rather than municipal curbside pickup. Households sort garbage, recycling and food scraps at the Nesters or Function Junction depots; larger and commercial loads go to the municipal transfer station.

What can go into a dumpster in Whistler?

A private bin must meet the hauler’s rules, RMOW source-separation requirements and the receiving facility’s current limits. Arrange separate streams before the container arrives.

The transfer station applies an additional banned-material surcharge when a landfill-waste load contains more than the allowed proportion of recyclable material. Sorting at the project site avoids contamination and unnecessary fees.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Non-hazardous residual garbage
  • Furniture and bulky items within facility size limits
  • Construction and demolition waste accepted under the current fee schedule
  • Separately prepared clean wood, dirty wood, metal, gypsum, yard waste and other recyclable streams

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Food scraps, paper, containers and other materials required to be separated
  • Paint, chemicals, fuel, batteries and other hazardous or stewardship products
  • Asbestos-containing material and unverified suspect renovation debris
  • Hot, liquid, biomedical, explosive, radioactive or otherwise dangerous waste

The current RMOW fee schedule lists hazardous waste as not accepted. Use the Waste Wizard to find the correct stewardship or hazardous-waste location.

How residential drop-off works

Detached-home waste generated in Whistler may be taken to the municipal depots. Strata, apartment, accommodation and business properties commonly use on-site rooms or private collection; follow the system provided by the property manager.

Depot and storage basics

Sort at home and use the current signs at the depot:

  • Keep garbage, recycling and food scraps in separate containers
  • Remove plastic bags and non-compostable packaging from the organics stream
  • Flatten cardboard and follow posted limits for each depot opening
  • Do not leave material outside a full or closed receptacle
  • Keep all attractants secured indoors or in an approved wildlife-resistant enclosure before the trip
  • Take business, renovation, bulky and oversized loads to the transfer station or another approved facility

The depots are not general-purpose dumping sites. Their eligibility and material limits differ from the staffed transfer station, so search the exact item before travelling.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Plan for a wildlife-resistant container fully on suitable private property. Do not assume a shoulder, parking lane, boulevard or other public space can be used for delivery or storage.

RMOW bylaws restrict depositing material or obstructing a highway. Because Whistler does not publish a general-purpose on-street dumpster permit in the reviewed waste guidance, obtain written direction from RMOW before arranging any placement that could affect public land or travel.

Private-property placement

  • Keep the bin and collection vehicle inside the legal parcel.
  • Use an approved wildlife-resistant container and keep it secured.
  • Protect pavement, utilities, drainage and snow-storage areas.
  • Maintain fire access, sightlines and safe pedestrian routes.

If public space may be affected

  • Contact RMOW before booking delivery.
  • Provide the exact location, dimensions, dates and servicing plan.
  • Ask which traffic, road-use, insurance or other approval applies.
  • Do not deliver until every required written authorization is issued.
