What can go into a dumpster in Abbotsford?

Dumpster service is privately operated. Ask the hauler which facility will receive the load and get written confirmation of accepted materials, sorting rules and weight limits.

Construction and demolition waste is excluded from City curbside garbage. Keep reusable, recyclable, compostable and hazardous material out of a mixed disposal bin.

Common private-bin loads (confirm first)

  • Non-hazardous household cleanout waste
  • Furniture and bulky items accepted by the receiving transfer station
  • Construction debris accepted by the selected hauler and facility
  • Source-separated wood, metal, concrete or other recoverable project materials

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Paint, solvents, pesticides, fuels and other hazardous products
  • Batteries, propane cylinders, electronics and products covered by recycling programs
  • Asbestos, contaminated soil, biomedical waste and unknown materials
  • Liquids, hot ashes, explosives and pressurized containers
  • Food scraps, yard waste and recyclable packaging where source separation applies

Acceptance differs between private facilities. Use the City Waste Wizard for household items and arrange regulated or commercial material directly with an authorized facility.

How residential collection works

Single-family homes and duplexes in the City program receive automated cart collection. Multi-family, industrial, commercial and institutional properties arrange private service and must separate recycling and compostables from garbage.

Set-out and sorting basics

Check the address-based calendar and current cart guide before collection:

  • Put food scraps and accepted yard waste in the green compost cart
  • Place empty, clean and dry accepted packaging and paper loose in the blue cart
  • Keep glass bottles and jars out of the blue cart and use the separate grey glass bin
  • Keep all cart lids closed; loose bags and overflow beside carts are not collected
  • Leave enough clearance for the automated collection arm
  • Store carts securely and follow mandatory bear-resistant cart rules in the designated Upper Straiton area

Collection dates, glass days and service alerts are address-specific. Use the City schedule or Abbotsford Curbside Collection app rather than relying on a fixed weekday.

Large items, dumpster rental or junk removal?

The City does not advertise routine curbside bulky-item pickup. Reuse suitable goods, self-haul to a facility that confirms acceptance or hire a private service.

Excess and bulky waste

For material outside City carts

The City directs excess garbage to paid drop-off. Search each item first because furniture, appliances and recyclable products may need different destinations.

Placing dumpsters and storage containers

Keep containers fully on suitable private property where possible. A garbage bin or other temporary structure that disrupts traffic or pedestrian movement on a City road or sidewalk requires a Highway Use Permit.

The City advises that a typical complete Highway Use Permit may take up to 15 business days to process and requires a compliant traffic-management plan. Apply before scheduling delivery.

Plan private-property placement

  • Keep the container and service truck off streets, sidewalks and boulevards.
  • Protect paving, utilities, drainage and overhead clearance.
  • Maintain emergency, vehicle and pedestrian access.

For road or sidewalk impacts

  • Apply online for a Highway Use Permit before delivery.
  • Submit the required traffic-management plan and supporting documents.
  • Allow for the City's stated processing time and current fees.
  • Follow all approved placement, safety, access and removal conditions.
