What can go into a dumpster in Surrey?

Private bin companies and receiving facilities set material rules, weight limits and fees. Describe the whole load to the hauler before delivery, especially for renovation or mixed waste.

Separate recyclable and restricted material before loading. Use Metro Vancouver Recycles to find an appropriate location for a specific item.

Common loads (confirm first)

  • Household junk and non-recyclable cleanout material
  • Furniture and bulky material not suitable for curbside carts
  • Construction debris such as wood, flooring and cabinetry when the hauler accepts it
  • Clean wood, yard trimmings, gypsum and mattresses when separated for the appropriate facility

Keep out unless specifically approved

  • Hazardous chemicals, fuels, asbestos and other regulated material
  • Batteries, electronics, propane tanks, paint and used oil
  • Food scraps and recyclable material banned from garbage under regional rules
  • Gypsum, mattresses and tires mixed into a general load

Some restricted items have free stewardship or depot options; they should not be hidden in a mixed load.

Who handles curbside collection?

Eligible single-family homes receive City garbage, recycling and organics service. Townhomes must confirm whether their complex uses City or private service. Apartment and commercial arrangements are different.

Single-family collection frequency

The regular City schedule is:

  • Organics every week
  • Recycling every two weeks
  • Garbage every two weeks, alternating with recycling

Apartments may receive City recycling and organics but arrange garbage privately. Surrey does not collect from commercial, industrial or institutional properties; those properties need a private hauler.

Private bin or junk removal

For larger or time-sensitive jobs

A bin suits loads you can fill yourself. A junk-removal crew loads and transports items for you. Confirm disposal, weight and restricted-material charges in writing.

Permits for dumpsters and moving containers

A request is required before placing a construction waste bin, moving container or storage container on a Surrey roadway, boulevard or other public property. Private property is the preferred location.

Apply at least five working days ahead. If approved, placement on City property requires a Traffic Obstruction Permit.

Public-property requirements

  • Provide at least $5 million liability insurance naming the City as additional insured.
  • The service company needs a valid Surrey business licence; construction work also requires a WorkSafeBC number.
  • Maintain at least four metres of unobstructed roadway and keep traffic lanes, cycle paths and sidewalks clear.

Placement and visibility

  • Bins need approved high-visibility reflective markings or delineators and a flashing barricade.
  • Distance rules apply near crosswalks, intersections, lanes and driveways.
  • Road placement is not allowed in the bulb of a cul-de-sac.
